Spring is finally here! Even though we love the change from winter to spring, we may also experience fatigue, belly bloating, digestive discomfort or craving for caffeine, sweet or salty foods.
According to Chinese Medicine, your liver works overtime adjusting to the seasonal changes from winter to spring. The liver must adapt to changes in temperature, air quality, available foods and activity levels.
Want to feel more alive? Lose weight effortlessly and revitalize your skin? When your liver functions at it's best, it metabolizes fat more efficiently as well as performing 500 other metabolic and digestive functions.
Here are 4 ways you can nourish your liver during this transition:
• Milk thistle tea: Milk thistle stimulates the liver to detox toxins from alcohol, medication, pesticides, environmental chemicals and heavy metals. Milk thistle also helps to protect the liver from the harmful effects of these toxins.
• Sour tastes: Chinese medicine believes that sour tastes stimulate the liver’s energy. Drink 2-4 cups of water with fresh lemon juice in the morning before eating. Use a salad dressing with apple cider vinegar and olive oil (see the pesto dressing recipe.)
• Liver/gallbladder nourishing foods: Eat plenty of foods that nourish and cleanse the liver such as: asparagus, beets, carrots, spinach, parsley and other leafy greens, cabbage, garlic, dandelion root tea (or greens), broccoli, cauliflower, brussel sprouts, apples, avocados, grapefruit, olive oil, turmeric and gluten-free grains.
• Do a liver/gallbladder cleanse. For a 3 day cleanse have the following foods:
~ 3-4 servings of cleansing vegetable soups (click on recipes at the left) ~ 2 juices or smoothies (click on recipes at the left) ~ Optional: 2 servings of cooked gluten free grains (millet, quinoa, amaranth) ~ 2 quarts spring water with fresh lemon juice.
Avoid sugar, caffeine, baked goods, pastas, breads, dairy, nuts, seeds, all fats (except a small amount of olive oil or avocado).
Take as much soup as you wish ~ you don’t need to go hungry. Although for the first day you might crave addicting substances like sugar and caffeine. But once they are cleanse out of the body, you will not longer crave those foods unless you start consuming them again.
Even a short cleanse can detox your liver, which metabolizes fat. Once the liver is cleared out, it burns fat more efficiently and you lose weight!
