I do my best to eat mindfully during the holidays ~ but I am also realistic. There will be days of overdoing it! Sugary foods, alcohol, caffeine and simply eating too much can throw off our metabolism and digestion. You feel bloated, foggy, tired and just can’t stop eating.
Here are some tips for tuning up your appetite and metabolism:
#1. Hydrate. Drink a quart or two of water a day, sipping all day long. Yes, it gets inconvenient when you need to use the bathroom more often, but it’s worth it. Drinking enough water flushes your filters, helps balance hormones (think depression, food craving, insomnia ~ all symptoms of dehydration.)
#2. Lemon juice. Add fresh lemon juice to your water. Lemons are acidic in your mouth and stomach but metabolize as alkaline in your blood. Most holiday foods (like sugar, alcohol, wheat, meat, caffeine) have an acidic effect and lemons help balance the acid/alkaline levels.
#3. Walk. Even 10 minutes of fast walking in fresh air will oxygenate your body and brain, improving digestion, vitality, clarity of mind and overall well being. I find that doing a 10 minute walk twice a day is very doable and keeps my metabolism up and my weight down.
#4. Probiotics. Double up on your healthy flora. A good quality live probiotic (kefir, yogurt or a supplement of at least 10 billion potency) strengthens your digestive system and helps the gut recover from eating sugar and alcohol, especially.
#5. Herbal Tea Herbal digestive, peppermint, ginger or milk thistle teas are great for aiding digestion and cleansing your liver. Drink at least 2 cups a day for a couple of days.
#6. Green Smoothie. A raw green smoothie is a great way to reset your metabolism and detox your body. Dark leafy greens are a rich source of chlorophyll, which binds with toxins, especially heavy metals, cleanses your liver, and oxygenates your cells. Raw fruits and veggies are anti-inflammatory and are potent source of antioxidants and live enzymes.
