I have long heard of the many effective, natural, safe uses of baking soda. The other day I decided to try it out as a toothpaste. I was amazed by how clean and smooth my teeth felt.
And white! My teeth had become dingy from drinking green tea. With daily use of baking soda, my teeth are whiter every day.
And baking soda is cost effective ~ it costs less than $3 for a pound (easily 5 years worth of tooth brushing) compared to spending $7 for a tube of natural non-flouride toothpaste. It takes a little getting used to the salty taste without the menthol flavoring, but I love that it is natural and inexpensive.
Baking soda is inexpensive, natural, eco-friendly and safe as a health and beauty aid as well as an effective replacement for many household products.
What is baking soda, anyway? It is a chemical compound called sodium bicarbonate.. It has a slightly salty, alkaline taste resembling that of washing soda (sodium carbonate). The natural mineral form is nahcolite and is a component of the mineral natron found dissolved in many mineral springs.
Here are a few of it’s many uses:
Toothbrush and oral appliance cleanser: Soak these items overnite in a glass of warm water with 2 tsp baking soda. The baking soda will clean and purify them.
Facial cleanser: Make a paste of 3 parts baking soda to 1 part water. Gently rub on face as an exfoliant. As a remedy for black heads and acne, you can leave the paste on those areas for 5 minutes and rinse off.
Body scrub: Use the same scrub as above. It feels great all over and softens elbow patches and heel cracks.
Deodorant: Since I stopped drinking coffee and eating red meat, I haven’t needed deordorant (somebody tell me if I’m wrong!) But baking soda makes a safe, effective product ~ just pat a little under your arms. It just takes a little bit.
Bug bites, poison ivy, sumac, oak: Make a paste with 3 parts baking soda and 1 part apple cider vinegar and pat on bites or rash. Leave on 15 minutes then rinse. Baking soda and vinegar absorbs poisons, relieves itchiness and cools inflammation.
Household cleanser: A thick paste of baking soda and water will clean just about anything without the use of harsh chemicals that harm your health and the environment. Use it as a non-scratch scrub for pots and pans, coffee pots, ovens, microwaves, sinks, tubs and floors. It can even be used as a silver polish, using a soft clean cloth (like a T-shirt rag).
